The Calgary Flames in seven games

The Tampa Bay Lightning touched the Prince of Wales Trophy and so are hoping history repeats itself.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Expenses Daly presented the trophy to captain Steven Stamkos carrying out a 1-0 earn against the brand new York Islanders in Video game 7 of the Stanley Cup Semifinals at Amalie Arena in Tampa upon Friday. Stamkos found the trophy before he and his teammates posed for photos with it.

The Lightning touched the Prince of Wales Trophy last season and won the Stanley Glass, defeating the Dallas Celebrities in six online games. In 2015, when Stamkos didn’t touch it, they lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six video games in the Cup Final. In 2004, Lightning captain Dave Andreychuk didn’t lift it, plus they continued to win the Glass, defeating the Calgary Flames in seven games.

Four of days gone by five groups to earn the Cup have touched the Prince of Wales Trophy. Ahead of last time of year, Sidney Crosby touched it in 2016 and in 2017 before assisting the Pittsburgh Penguins win the Glass each period, and Alex Ovechkin do the same in 2018 with the Washington Capitals, who received the Cup.

The tradition of not touching the Prince of Wales Trophy hasn’t exercised well for Eastern Conference champions in recent seasons. The Boston Bruins in 2011 will be the most recent group to earn the Cup after choosing never to contact it. Days gone by five teams never to do so dropped the Glass Final.

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara did not touch the trophy in 2019, and Boston lost to the St. Louis Blues in seven online games in the Cup Final. THE BRAND NEW Jersey Devils (2012), Bruins (2013), NY Rangers (2014) and Lightning (2015) all dropped in the Glass Last after refusing to contact the trophy.

Due to temporary divisional realignment because of COVID-19 this year, the third circular of the playoffs was renamed the semifinals, rather than the conference finals.

The Prince of Wales Trophy have been awarded to the Eastern Conference champion because the 1993-94 season.

The Montreal Canadiens, who defeated the Vegas Golden Knights in the other semifinal, didn’t touch the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl, generally awarded to the Western Meeting champion.
